Frequently Asked Questions

Q. No. 1: What is the purpose of standardized tanker washing and audit programs?

A: On this Web site, you should review "Standardized Tanker Wash/Sanitation Program" found in the "Documents Archive." This document reviews purposes and general guidelines for approving tanker wash facilities, what is expected from an approved tanker wash station, and how the juice industry plans to work within these programs.

Q. No. 2: Who are the "Auditors" and how do I contact them?

A: The Auditors are industry companies that have been performing tanker wash audits for a long time. They were also key members of Committees that developed the Standard Audit Form. A list of these Auditors and their contact information may be found on this Web site by clicking on the "Auditors" tab.

Q. No. 3: How do I know what to expect during a 'standard audit'?

A: Auditors utilize a Standard Audit Form. A copy of the Audit form is available on this Web site in the "Documents Archive."

Q. No. 4: Where may I find the latest version of the Tanker Wash Guidelines?

A: A link to the "JPA Model Tanker Wash Guidelines For The Fruit Juice Industry" is found on this Web site under "Links". Click on "Tanker Wash Guidelines."  A copy of the Guidelines may also be obtained via the JPA Web site: www.juiceproducts.org, under the heading, "Tanker Wash Resources."  JPA is responsible for maintaining the guidelines in their latest version.

Q. No. 5: Is it possible for a third party to also be an "Auditor"?

A: Yes. The Auditors have a program for qualifying other auditors. Generally, this involves at least two co-audits with an Auditor, as well as a requirement to use the Standard Audit Form and to require facilities being audited to follow the JPA Tanker Wash Guidelines. Contact one of the Auditors to discuss becoming qualified.

Q. No. 6: How do I find a tanker wash facility in my part of the country?

A: A list of facilities is found on this Web site under "Wash Facilities."  You can sort this listing by name or state. Contact details, a link that takes you to a map of the location, and some of the wash services information is included for each tanker wash facility.

Q. No. 7: How do I know which Tanker Wash Type has to be done?

A:

The tanker wash guidelines published by the Juice Products Association (JPA) define the types of tanker washing required, based upon the most recent load of product carried by a tanker. The Tanker Wash Guidelines are available on this Web site under "Documents Archive" and may be obtained via the JPA Web site, www.juiceproducts.org, under the heading, "Tanker Wash Resources."

Wash Types Described in the JPA Tanker Wash Guidelines
Type 1: A customer specified potable water rinse between loads of same product.
Type 2: Water Based Products: Tankers previously hauling water based food products.
Type 3: Water/Oil & Oil Based Products: Tankers previously hauling water/oil or oil based food products.
Type 4: Where prevous load carried foods with potential allergenic risks.                      Type 5: Cleaning requirement after hauling Wine Vinegar or Wine Alcohol.

The JPA Guidelines describe/define the protocols required by each of these wash procedures; the guidelines also provides a (partial) list of allowable food-grade products, and their required wash type.
